Santiago, Chile, welcomes the 19th edition of the Pan American Games – the top continental event for NOCs in North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. Competitions begin on 18 October ahead of the Opening Ceremony on 20 October. Paris 2024 Olympic qualification quotas are also available in several of the sports. Top athletes from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean's will come together in Santiago, Chile, from 20 October–5 November for the Pan American Games 2023, from which you can also watch boxing action live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app.

While the Opening Ceremony is set for 20 October, competition begins two days prior on 18 October in baseball. The Games then last for 16 days before the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 5 November.

More than 100 direct quota spots for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available, including in archery, artistic gymnastics, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, diving, equestrian (dressage, eventing, jumping), hockey, handball, modern pentathlon, sailing, shooting, sport climbing, surfing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and water polo, with possible direct berths in trampoline too**.**

Santiago 2023 Pan American Games: Torch, motto, and mascot

The Santiago 2023 mascot is named "Fiu". It is a bird inspired by the rush tyrant (Tachuris rubrigastra), which has seven colours and is native to South America. The name was chosen because of the sound it makes when it runs past you: "Fiuuuu".

Meanwhile, the torch of the Games was designed inspired by Chilean colours. It weighs 1.5kg (3.3lb) and measures 0.66m (26 inches) in length.

The Games' motto is Soñar, Jugar, Ganar, Spanish for "Dream, Play, Win".

Stars to watch at the Pan American Games 2023 in Santiago

Among the many stars confirmed to be participating at the Pan American Games are Canadian swimmer Maggie Mac Neil, Cuban judoka Idalys Ortiz, Puerto Rican table tennis star Adriana Díaz, BMX freestyler Daniel Dhers from Venezuela.

Athletics fans can look forward to Canadian hammer throw world champion Ethan Katzberg and Olympic race walk bronze medallist Evan Dunfee in action, while hosts Chile can count their women's football team among the favourites for gold, led from the goal by Christiane Endler.

U.S. fans will no doubt be following athletes like former basketball sensation Jimmer Fredette playing in the 3X3 event, and Olympic silver medallist Jordan Chiles in women's artistic gymnastics. Chiles's fellow gymnast, Brazil's Rebeca Andrade is also due to compete.

Olympic road race champion Richard Carapaz will also don the Ecuadorian national colours once more to go for cycling gold.
