Paris 2024 Olympics India schedule today, July 31: All eyes on Lovlina Borgohain, PV Sindhu and rifle shooters
Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain will begin her Paris 2024 Olympics campaign in boxing on Wednesday, July 31.
Lovlina won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 in the 69kg but will compete in the women’s 75kg category at Paris 2024 as 69kg is no longer an Olympic weight category.
Lovlina enters Paris 2024 as the only seeded Indian boxer and will take on Sunniva Hofstad of Norway in the round of 32 bout at 3:50 PM. Nishant Dev (men’s 71kg) will be up against Ecuador’s Jose Gabriel Rodriguez Tenorio in his opener.
World No. 13 PV Sindhu, also a bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, will look to avoid an upset against the 73rd-ranked Kristin Kuuba of Estonia in the women’s singles badminton Group M match.
It might be the last easy outing for PV Sindhu at Paris 2024. She will face the People’s Republic of China’s He Bing Jiao, ranked ninth, in the round of 16 contest and the challenge gets steeper thereon.
Lakshya Sen, 18th in the badminton rankings for the men’s singles, will also have a do-or-die clash against world No. 3 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia. HS Prannoy, seeded 13th, will have a relatively easier clash in the men’s singles Group K against world No. 70 Le Duc Phat but he also needs a win to progress to the knockouts.
Besides boxing and badminton, Indian athletes will compete in shooting, archery, table tennis and rowing events today.
Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, the most successful Indian shooter at the Asian Games last year, will feature in the qualifying round of the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions along with compatriot Swapnil Kusale.
Four-time Olympians Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai will start their quest for India’s first Olympic medals in archery from the round of 64.
Deepika is slated to face Reena Parnat of Estonia at 3:56 PM in the women’s event while Tarundeep takes on Tom Hall of Great Britain at 9:28 PM in the men’s competition.
Manika Batra, who became the first Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 at the Olympics on Monday, will feature in the women’s singles for a place in the quarter-finals. Her opponent is yet to be confirmed.
Balraj Panwar, the only Indian rower at Paris 2024, will compete for places 13 to 24 in the men’s singles sculls. He finished fifth in his quarter-final race on Tuesday and was knocked out from the medal race.
