Six Indian boxers - four women and two men - will be fighting for glory at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg) will be marking her Olympic debut in Paris alongside World Championships bronze medallist Nishant Dev (men’s 71Kg), Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg).

Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg) and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Amit Panghal (men’s 51kg) will be returning Olympians in Paris. Both were part of India’s nine-member Tokyo 2020 contingent.

Indian boxers have won three Olympic medals to date but none have been better than a bronze.

Vijender Singh was the first Indian to stand on an Olympic boxing podium after clinching the men’s 75kg bronze at Beijing 2008 and Mary Kom followed suit in the women’s 51kg at London 2012 to become India’s first female Olympic boxing medallist.

Lovlina Borgohain medalled in the women’s 69kg competition at Tokyo 2020 and will be looking to become the first Indian boxer to win two Olympic medals in Paris.

The Assamese boxer, however, will be competing in the 75kg division as her old category has been scrapped from the Olympic boxing programme. Lovlina, however, has adapted well to the switch and heads into Paris as the reigning world champion in the division.

She also won the Asian Championships 2022 gold medal in the 75kg category and clinched a silver at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou last year.

Having finally succeeded Mary Kom in the 50kg division, reigning world champion Nikhat Zareen will also have a lot to prove at her maiden Summer Games appearance.

After enduring a disappointing campaign in Tokyo, former world No. 1 Amit Panghal will also be looking for redemption while the 23-year-old Nishant Dev has also been in good form.

Though there are 13 boxing weight categories - seven for men and six for women - being contested in Paris, India have only secured quotas in six of these events.

The boxing action at Paris 2024 starts with the preliminary rounds on July 27 and concludes on August 11. A total of 52 medals - 13 gold, 13 silver and 26 bronze - will be on offer in the sport.

Two bronze medals are awarded in each weight class at the Olympics.
