Balraj Panwar will be the only Indian challenge at the Paris 2024 Olympics rowing competition. He will be competing in the men’s single sculls event.
Rowing events at Paris 2024 will be held at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium from July 27 to August 3.
Panwar will be making his debut appearance at the Olympics in France this year.
The 25-year-old Army man earned his spot in India’s Paris 2024 contingent by winning a bronze medal at the Asian and Oceanian Rowing Olympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju, the Republic of Korea in April.
Panwar shot into fame last year at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.
Originally a reserve in the Indian rowing squad to Hangzhou, Panwar got an opportunity to compete in the main event and impressed with a run till Final A, eventually finishing fourth.
Coached by Beijing 2008 Olympian Bajrang Lal Takhar, Panwar will be out to exceed expectations yet again in Paris.
The men’s lightweight double sculls duo of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh was India’s only entry at Tokyo 2020. They finished 11th in their event in Japan three years back, logging India’s best finish in any Olympic rowing event to date.
Rowing events have been a part of the Olympics since Paris 1900 while India first competed in the sport at Sydney 2000 with Kasam Khan and Inderpal Singh pairing up for the men's coxless pairs event.
