India have a full-strength team of six archers competing for medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The last time India managed to field a fully-stacked archery team at the Olympic Summer Games was at London 2012.
Former world No. 1 Deepika Kumari and veteran archer Tarundeep Rai are making their fourth Olympic appearance in Paris. Pravin Jadhav is also returning for his second Olympic appearance after Tokyo 2020.
This is also Deepika’s first Olympic appearance since becoming a mother.
The remaining four members of the Indian archery team for Paris 2024 are making their Olympic debuts. Archery events at Paris 2024 will be held from July 25 to August 4 at Les Invalides
At Paris 2024, Indian archers will be in contention in all five archery medal events - men’s team and individual, women’s team and individual and mixed team.
The mixed team event was added to the Olympic programme starting from this year.
Archery competitions at Paris 2024 will begin with the ranking rounds on July 25, a day before the official Opening Ceremony. In the ranking round, all archers shoot 72 arrows and the scores are recorded.
The seedings for the men’s and individual competitions are determined based on scores in the ranking round.
For the men’s and women’s team competitions, the top four seeded teams from the ranking round will advance directly to the quarter-finals. The teams seeded between eighth to 12th will face each other for the remaining four quarter-final spots.
The ranking round will also determine qualification for the mixed team event with only the top 16 pairs making the cut.
For each nation fielding at least one men’s archer and one women’s archer, the top men's score and top women's score from the ranking rounds are combined to determine the team’s seeding.
For each of the five events, the losing semi-finalists will face off for the bronze medal.
India are yet to win a single archery medal at the Olympics.
