It’s not every day you get to see an athletics field as strong as the one assembled for the Monaco Diamond League 2023, otherwise known as the Herculis meet.
Olympic and world champions are out in force, as athletes put the final preparations in place for the World Athletics Championships that are scheduled for 19-27 August in Budapest.
While stars such as Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, running in the 400m flat as she seeks to extend her gold medal-winning prowess beyond the 400m hurdles, and Mondo Duplantis will steal the headlines, there are also some intriguing subplots in Monaco.
Men’s 400m hurdles champion Alison dos Santos will test himself against the likes of Karsten Warholm having missed the majority of the outdoor season through injury.
And Kenya's Faith Kipyegon could add a third world record of the year to her collection as she races in the non-Olympic mile distance.

Athletes to watch at the Monaco Diamond League 2023
To say the Monaco field is stacked would be an understatement. The Herculis Diamond League start list reads like a who’s who of the track & field world.
Among the stars on show, Sweden’s world record holder Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis will be a strong favourite in the men’s pole vault, although he will face some top-class competition in the form of the USA’s Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Christopher Nilsen, France’s London 2012 gold medallist Renaud Lavillenie and Philippines' rising star Ernest John Obiena.
The women’s 200m sees the reigning world champion Shericka Jackson of Jamaica take on Britain’s Daryll Neita and Dina Asher-Smith, as well as the USA’s Olympic bronze medallist Gabrielle Thomas plus one of the most exciting young sprint stars on the planet, Julien Alfred of St Lucia.
For Olympic champion Karsten Warholm (Norway) and world champion Alison dos Santos (Brazil), the tables have turned from last year when Warholm entered the Worlds on the back of an injury-blighted season and failed to medal in the final.
This year it is Dos Santos whose February knee injury puts him in a race against time to be fit to defend his world title. This race will be as stern a test as he could have asked for.
In fact, everywhere you look in Monaco there will be world-class talent on display.
The women’s long jump features Olympic and world champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany and, intriguingly, Venezuela's triple jump world record holder Yulimar Rojas who has stated she is now aiming for two Olympic crowns. Britain’s Jazmin Sawyers and Nigeria’s Ese Brume are also on the start list.
Australia’s world champion Eleanor Patterson goes in the women’s high jump where she will be joined by the likes of Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
Faith Kipyegon will aim to continue her hot streak, as the double Olympic gold medallist and reigning world record holder in the 1500m and 5000m faces Laura Muir over the mile.
Factor in Grenada’s javelin world champion Anderson Peters, Morocco’s Olympic 3000m steeplechase gold medallist Soufiane El Bakkali and a showdown between some of Africa’s finest sprinters, Akani Simbine, Letsile Tebogo and Ferdinand Omanyala, in the men’s 100m and you can see just why this meet is primed to be one of the most exciting of the year.
