World and Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, fresh from her victory at the U.S. Championships, will be back on the athletics track at the Meeting Herculis EBS in Monaco on Friday (21 July).

The 400m hurdles world record holder McLaughlin-Levrobe will again be competing in the women's 400m without hurdles. The American, who ran the 10th-fastest 400m of all time at Nationals in Oregon, has confirmed her intention to only run that event at August’s World Championships, meaning there will be a new world 400m hurdles champion in Budapest.

The 23-year-old, who trains with coach Bobby Kersee, timed a world lead 48.74 seconds when she won the U.S. 400m title in Oregon, a result that could have influenced her decision to take a break from her preferred race.

Kersse confirmed to LA Times that she will not be running the 400m hurdles for now.

“The double does not allow us, I think, the proper amount of time and recovery to do both and I think the bigger challenge would obviously be to see how we can do in the 400. We won our nationals, which is hard to win and we did it in good fashion, so I think that we want to continue moving forward with the challenge.”

In Monaco, McLaughlin-Levrone will line up against the new American 400m hurdles champion Shamier Little, NCAA outdoor champion Rhasidat Adeleke, Kenya’s 400m record-holder Mary Moraa, World 400m bronze medallist Sada Williams of Barbados, Poland’s European silver medallist Natalia Kaczmarek, and Lieke Klaver, who took the 4x400m relay silver with the Netherlands at last year’s worlds.
