Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, have qualified for the playoffs in 12 out of 14 editions they have played, making them the most consistent team in the tournament's history.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni has been a central figure in CSK’s success over the years. All five of CSK’s IPL titles have come under his captaincy.

Even when CSK are not winning titles, they go deep into the tournament and have played in the IPL finals for a record 10 times.

They lost the 2008 final against Rajasthan Royals off the last ball and the semi-final against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009.

However, CSK won back-to-back titles in the following two years. Riding on Suresh Raina’s brilliant half-century, CSK beat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs in the 2010 final. Against RCB in 2011, Murali Vijay struck a 52-ball 95 in a total of 205 for 5 and CSK went on to win the match by 58 runs.

Chennai Super Kings finished runners-up for the next two seasons, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, respectively.

MS Dhoni’s men lost the second qualifier to Kings XI Punjab in 2014. The next year, CSK finished runners-up for the fourth time in eight seasons after losing to Mumbai Indians in the final.

After not playing the 2016 and 2017 editions of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings, in 2018, proved that T20 cricket was not just the young man’s game.

CSK were called the Dad's Army for having several players in their team aged over 30. However, the Super Kings won their first title in seven years, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the final. Shane Watson’s unbeaten 117 off 57 made light work of a 179-run target.

In 2019, Chennai Super Kings lost the final to Mumbai Indians by one run. Next year, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their history after finishing seventh.

CSK mounted a comeback in 2021 by finishing second in the league stage and then got the better of Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

With Dhoni turning 40 in 2022, Ravindra Jadeja was handed over the captaincy to ensure a smooth transition. However, CSK had their worst IPL season in history with a ninth-place finish. Jadeja handed over the captaincy back to Dhoni midway through the season.

In IPL 2023, CSK lost four of their first nine matches but led by Devon Conway’s consistent run at the top, they qualified for the final and defeated Gujarat Titans for their fifth title. Jadeja scored 10 runs off the last two balls in the final to win it for CSK.

MS Dhoni gave up captaincy ahead of the IPL 2024 season. Ruturaj Gaikwad, skipper of the Indian T20 cricket team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games, took over the leadership.
