Captaincy is not everyone’s cup of tea, especially when the format is T20 cricket. A small calculation error can ruin all the good work as there is little scope for erroneous decision-making.
Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni have been the most successful Indian T20 captains in history.
Dhoni’s track record includes clinching the inaugural T20 World Cup title in 2007. Dhoni also helped India secure a runners-up finish in 2014.
Dhoni's captaincy lasted for 72 T20 Internationals from 2007 to 2016, marking the lengthiest stint as an Indian T20 captain. He was known for his ability to take the right calls under pressure, patience and nurturing young talents with compassionate leadership.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, has led India to the most wins in T20Is. India have won 49 of the 62 matches under Rohit's captaincy. The Hitman emulated Rohit's success in his final tournament as captain and led the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup 2024 title.
There have been a total of 14 Indian T20 captains in men’s cricket since Virender Sehwag led India in their first T20 match against South Africa in Johannesburg on December 1, 2006. India chased down South Africa’s 126/9 in 19.5 overs with six wickets to spare.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya has also captained India in 16 T20Is. Suryakumar Yadav is the current captain of the Indian cricket team in T20 Internationals.
Jasprit Bumrah is the only bowler to lead India in the T20 Internationals while Ruturaj Gaikwad is the first to lead the Indian team to an Asian Games gold medal at Hangzhou 2023.
