The 2023 Pan American Games will attract nearly 7,000 athletes from North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean taking place from 20 October to 5 November.

Jamaica has competed uninterrupted at the Pan American Games since its inception in 1951 when it sent a lone athlete to Buenos Aires.

Four years ago in Lima 2019, Jamaica produced their best-ever haul at the Games when it clinched a total of 19 medals surpassing their previous record from 60 years before.

Track and field have consistently delivered the goods for the Jamaicans at the Games and will once again be the backbone of their campaign. The Jamaican team will be without some of its sprinting superstars such as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shericka Jackson, who won the 100m, 200, and 400m titles in Lima 2019, respectively. The team will instead rely on the next generation to bring in the silverware.

Former world discus throw silver medallist Fedrick Dacres will spearhead the team and will be looking to win back-to-back titles. Commonwealth Games 3,000m steeplechase champion Aisha Praught-Leer, who won silver in the 1,500m in Lima 2019, will be looking to upgrade to gold in Santiago.

How many times has Jamaica taken part in the PanAm Games?

Santiago 2023 will be the 19th edition of the continental multi-sport event for NOCs from North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Jamaica has been involved in every single Pan American Games since its inception in Buenos Aires in 1951.

Legendary sprinter Herb McKenley was Jamaica’s only athlete at the Games but still accounted for himself in spectacular fashion. McKenley won bronze in the 100m, 200m, and 400m ensuring the smallest delegation at the event punched well above its weight. He is the only man to have made the final round at the Olympics in all three of these sprint events.

What’s Jamaica’s biggest medal haul at the PanAm Games?

Jamaica has won a combined 149 medals - 31 gold, 49 silver, and 69 bronze - over the 18 PanAm Games the country has participated in since 1951. They sit 13th in the all-time medal table with the United States on top.

The Caribbean nation achieved their highest medal tally at the 2019 PanAm Games in Lima where they won 19 medals - six gold, six silver and seven bronze - to finish 13th on the medal table.

The team surpassed their previous best haul from Chicago 1959 where raked in 14 medals - two gold, four silver, and eight bronze.

What was Jamaica’s medal tally at the Pan American Games 2019?

The Jamaica Olympic Association targeted its best-ever medal haul at the PanAm Games when it selected its largest contingent consisting of 124 athletes - 69 men and 55 women - competing in 17 sports.

The team did not disappoint in achieving exactly what they set out to do with the team returning to the island nation with its biggest haul in 18 editions of the continental event.

The track and field again contributed the lion’s share winning 17 of their 19 medals finishing third in the athletics medal table behind the United States and Brazil.
