Gangwon 2024: Key athletes to watch on Day 2 of the Winter Youth Olympic Games
The super-G event starts the alpine skiing competition at Gangwon 2024. In the women’s discipline, Germany’s Romy Ertl is looking to follow in the footsteps of her mum, the three-time Olympic medallist Martina Ertl. 16-year-old Romy Ertl has already made her senior debut this season, racing in FIS events and securing eight podiums, including two victories.
However, the U.S. skier and national champion Annika Hunt will be a difficult one to beat. In the men’s field, Miha Oserban might be a slalom specialist, but the Slovenian should not be underestimated in super-G either.
In biathlon, the young athletes will take on the single mixed relay. France, Italy, and Norway are among the top contenders at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre.
Luge action continues, where Italy lines up strong in men’s singles. Leon Haselrieder and Philipp Brunner set the best times in the sixth and final training session. The Italians are also looking like the ones to beat in the women's doubles, as Alexandra Oberstolz and Sofie Kofler have set some impressive times during training. Oberstolz picked up silver in the women's singles on day one.
The short track speed skating competitions crack on, with the 1000m event for both men and women. Double silver medallist from the 2022 Junior World Championship Angel Daleman, of the Netherlands and Yang Jingru of People's Republic of China will be among the medal favourites in the women’s field, while Hungary’s Dominik Major, who is a three-time gold medallist from Winter European Youth Olympic Festival, will be a favourite for the men, alongside the winner of the 1500m Joo Jaehee from the Republic of Korea.
In ski jumping, the mixed team event takes place. Norway, Germany, Slovenia, and Poland are set to battle for the last set of ski jumping medals at Gangwon 2024.
Day 2 medal events conclude with the snowboard cross mixed team competition, which will be contested for the first time at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. The nations to look out for are Austria, France, Switzerland, and the United States.
