Petra Vlhova, Marco Schwarz, and Andorra's history-maker Joan Verdu are some of the alpine skiing stars who have competed at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
Lausanne 2020 served as a springboard for athletes such as Hanna Aronsson Elfman of Sweden, Dzenifera Germane of Latvia, and Caitlin McFarlane of France: these three budding skiers are now making a name for themselves in the World Cup, the top international circuit in the sport.

Alpine skiing venues and dates at Gangwon 2024
The competitions will be held at the Jeongseon High1 Ski Resort, a venue that is part of the legacy from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
Six years ago, the popular ski resort in the Republic of Korea hosted the alpine speed events (super G, downhill): on these slopes Ester Ledecka claimed a surprise super G title just days before winning a historic second gold in the snowboard parallel giant slalom.
Jeongseon holds special memories for Sofia Goggia, who sealed her first career major title in the women's downhill, and for Aksel Lund Svindal, who ended his Olympic career with a victory in the Super G.
The YOG alpine action will begin on Sunday, 21 January with both the men's and women's Super G events, and will conclude on Friday 26 January, with the mixed team parallel.
Alpine skiing competition disciplines at Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympics
Nine sets of medals will be awarded in the alpine skiing events: two in slalom, two in giant slalom, two in Super G, two in individual combined and one in mixed team parallel.
The technical events - slalom and giant slalom - are contested over two heats on the same day, while the Super G is the only speed event in the programme.
In the individual combined, competitors race in a Super G and then in a slalom, with the times combined for an overall total.
In the parallel mixed team event, nations are represented by four skiers - two per gender - competing head-to-head in four runs of parallel racing in a knockout format.
Gangwon 2024: Alpine skiers to watch
Sixteen-year-old Romy Ertl is looking to follow in the footsteps of her mum Martina Ertl, a three-time Olympic medallist and a two-time world champion for Germany.
After collecting several national titles at youth level, she made her senior debut this season, racing in FIS events and securing eight podiums, including two victories.
At 17, Annika Hunt is already well on the path to success as a student of Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont, the same institution where Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin trained between 2009 and 2013.
A versatile athlete, Hunt won the super-G national title in March 2023 in addition to her silver medals in the slalom and giant slalom.
With the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games just two years away, Giorgia Collomb is considered one of Italy's most interesting prospects: the 17-year-old from La Thuile is a national junior champion in slalom and has started to collect points in the European Cup, alpine's second tier circuit behind the World Cup.
In the men's field, watch out for Miha Oserban, who won giant slalom gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2023. The Slovenian talent hails from the same town as Olympic champion Tina Maze and is hoping to continue his country’s fine winter sporting legacy that includes Beijing 2022 silver medallist Zan Kranjec.
