Of course, no season would be complete without a showstopping grand finale.
With eight of the world’s best-performing singles players ready to compete for one, final title, the ATP Finals 2024 promise a healthy serving of astonishing aces, spectacular shots and unparalleled fireworks on court.
In anticipation of the ATP Finals 2024, Olympics.com turns the spotlight on five players hoping to end the season on a high note in front of thousands of passionate fans at the Palasport Olimpico in Turin, Italy from 10 to 17 November.
Jannik Sinner: Local favorite looks claim title evaded him last season
The name Jannik Sinner became synonymous with victory in 2024, as the Italian tennis ace stamped his authority on hard court tournaments, winning the Australian Open, US Open and three ATP Masters 1000 titles to cap off a sensational breakout season.
The 22-year-old from San Candido, Italy was rewarded with the top spot in the ATP rankings, making him the first Italian player in history to claim the highly coveted number one ranking.
He’ll return to the Palasport Olimpico, site of ice hockey matches at the Olympic Winter Games Turin 2006, with thoughts of redemption circulating in his mind, after falling to Olympic champion Novak Djokovic in the final match of the ATP Finals 2023.
Nevertheless, with Djokovic sidelined due to injury, Sinner will enter the ATP Finals 2024 as the prohibited favourite. With 65 match victories to his name this season and only six losses across all tournaments, it's easy to see why.
Still, he’ll have to fend off seven equally hungry players to claim his first ATP Finals title.
Carlos Alcaraz: Spain’s prodigious tennis superstar searches for next title
Carlos Alcaraz was certainly hard to miss on the court in 2024. The right-handed star added two more major titles to his name, becoming only the sixth male player to win both Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year during the Open era.
His “summer of success” extended beyond the majors to the Olympic Games Paris 2024, where he finished runner-up behind Djokovic to claim a silver medal in the men’s singles event.
The 21-year-old from El Palmar, Spain will be eager to prove his hard court credentials at the ATP Finals 2024, after early exits at the US Open, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters.
He’ll need to channel the form he displayed on the clay and grass over the summer to stand any chance of claiming his maiden ATP Finals title.
Daniil Medvedev chases first tournament win in 2024
It’s been a season of encouraging, but frustrating results for 2020 ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev.
Despite winning 45 out of 64 matches this season, tournament victories have eluded the experienced right-hander. His best finish came at the Australian Open, where he lost a five-set thriller against Sinner to finish as the runner-up.
The 28-year-old’s frequent victories have led him back to the ATP Finals for the sixth time in his career. While Sinner and Alcaraz have gotten the better of Medvedev for much of the season, he’ll hope to channel his superior experience into a memorable run at the 2024 ATP Finals title.
Taylor Fritz: US Open runner-up looks for redemption
Taylor Fritz made his ATP Finals debut in 2022, advancing to the semifinals, where he was eliminated by the indomitable Djokovic.
Nonetheless, he showed a courageous amount of fight in the match, forcing tiebreaks in both sets against one of the greatest tennis players in history.
The 27-year-old’s tenacity was on full display this season, as he finished runner-up to Sinner at the US Open, while making the quarterfinals at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
Those results have led him back to the ATP Finals for the second time in his career, where he'll aim for a finals birth.
Fritz enters the tournament with 49 match victories to his name this season, including two ATP 250 tournament titles.
Alex De Minaur: Australia’s rising star aims for successful debut
Alex De Minaur is new to the ATP Finals stage. The 25-year-old from Sydney, Australia has gradually risen through the ranks to become one of the most exciting men’s tennis players.
Despite nagging injuries this season, which forced him to withdraw from the Olympic Games Paris 2024, De Minaur advanced to the quarterfinals at the French Open, US Open and Wimbledon. He also claimed a pair of tournament victories at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico and ATP 250 tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Nicknamed “Demon,” he’ll look to be a thorn in the side of more favoured players as he attempts to create a stunning upset and claim the ATP Finals 2024 title.
