Alexander Zverev dominated home favourite Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2 to land the 2024 ATP Paris Masters men's singles title on Sunday (3 November).
The German tennis world number two and Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist quickly silenced the capacity crowd inside Bercy's Palais Omnisports, needing just 37 minutes to wrap up the first set.
Humbert, a winner of two ATP tour titles this year, was broken in the third and fifth games with the German dropping just one point on serve in the whole of the first set. It was a similar story in the second as Zverev raced into a 4-0 lead.
The Frenchman won just five points on return in the whole match as Zverev continued his fine year in the French capital. He has won two of his four ATP finals and lost a five-set thriller to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final.
“I knew I had to play like this to win today,” said Zverev after. “Ugo is an incredible player, but here in Paris, he plays even better than he usually does and I knew that. Once the crowd gets involved, it’s going to be difficult. So, I had to take that away early, and I did, so I’m happy about that.”
The 27-year-old now has seven ATP Masters 1000 titles and moves ahead of Jannik Sinner with a tour-leading 66th win of 2024.
Despite the loss, Humbert, 26, will take great heart from this week, where he reached a career-first Masters final on home soil after beating four-time Slam winner Alcaraz in the last-16.
Zverev will next play the ATP Finals in Turin from 10-17 November, where he will seek to emulate his successes in 2018 and 2021 at the Tour’s season-ending showpiece.
