Home hero Lee Zii Jia gets his 2023 badminton season underway this week in front of his Malaysian fans as the Malaysia Open, the year's first Super 1000 event, takes place from 10–15 January.
Lee is the second seed in the men's singles draw as he looks to get the new season off to the best possible start, having sufferd the ignominy of missing last season's World Tour Finals.
It will be Lee's first World Tour competition since parting ways with coach Indra Wijaya in November.
Zii Jia has recently spoken of his desire to solidify his world number two ranking, but faces a tricky start to the season after being drawn against Japan's Naraoka Kodai in the opening round.
A potential second-round clash against national team-mate Ng Tze Yong awaits, with India's Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy possibly lying in wait in the third round.
The finals in men's, women's, and doubles disciplines take place on Sunday 15 January.
Olympic and world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark is the top seed in the opposite half of the draw to Zii Jia.
