Reigning World all-around champion Rebeca Andrade will make her 2023 competitive debut this week at the 2023 Brazilian Gymnastics Championships. The event is set for Friday (18 August) and Sunday (20 August) and will be held in Lauro de Freitas in Bahia, Brazil.
Andrade will be seeking a third-straight national title, having won in 2021 and 2022. The competition is the first of a busy second half of the year for Andrade who is expected to also compete at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, in late September and the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in October.
The 24-year-old has kept a conservative competition schedule since suffering a third ACL tear in 2019. The tactic has paid off with Andrade making history at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in the summer of 2021, winning all-around silver and vault gold medals.
Last year, she became the first South American woman to claim the World all-around gold medal at the global event in Liverpool, England.
Andrade will be joined by several other stars of the Brazilian squad including Olympians Jade Barbosa, Lorrane Oliveira and Flavia Saraiva.
The men’s field includes Olympic medallists Arthur Zanetti, the 2012 still rings gold medallist, and Arthur Nory, the 2016 floor exercise bronze medallist.
