Cambodia is hosting the 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games with 11 nations from across the region competing for glory in Phnom Penh from 5 to 17 May.
Some 581 events will take place across the entirety of the Games, and athletics is one of the most highly anticipated.
The Southeast Asian Games athletics competition kicks off away from the stadium with the marathon and race walk on 6 April. From there, all the track & field action takes place in Morodok Techo Stadium in Phnom Penh from 8 May, culminating with the women’s and men’s 4 x 400m relay finals on Friday 12 May.
When it comes to the athletes to watch, keep a close eye on Lalu Muhammad Zohri from Indonesia, who shot into the public consciousness with a historic 100m gold at the World U20 Championships in 2018. Zohri's victory made him the first-ever Indonesian male to win a medal in the history of the championships, and he followed it up in 2019 with silver at the Asian Championships.
In the women’s 400m, Malaysia’s Shereen Vallabuoy is also one to keep a close eye on after her time of 51.8 seconds at the Mt SAC Relays Athletics Championship gave her the title of fastest-ever Malaysian over the distance. She’ll be competing in both the 400m and 4 x 400m relays in Cambodia.
Singapore’s Shanti Pereira brings a wealth of experience in the sprints, with the 2015 and 2021 Southeast Asian Games 200m champion already experiencing the pressure cooker of Olympic competition when she raced at Tokyo 2020 (in 2021).
In the field, Irfan Shamsuddin of Malaysia is a five-time Southeast Asian Games discus champion who has been unbeatable in the championships since 2013.
