The Indian men’s team starts its Asian Games 2023 cricket campaign in the quarter-finals vs Nepal in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China on Tuesday.
The IND vs NEP cricket match, to be played at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field, will also mark India’s debut in Asian Games cricket. The match starts at 6:30 AM in India and will be live streamed and telecast.
The Indian men’s cricket team is the top T20 international team in the world while Nepal are world No. 16 in the format, which is being played at Hangzhou 2023.
Despite the gulf in rankings, the match poses an interesting challenge for a young Indian team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and flanked by the likes of Yasahasvi Jaiswal and Arshdeep Singh. India are without their first-team players
The Nepal cricket team, too, has been in interesting form at Hangzhou and created the record for the highest T20 cricket score in a group game vs Mongolia.
Heading into the India vs Nepal clash in Hangzhou, here’s an overview of the opponents against whom the Indian men’s cricket team will make its Asian Games debut.
Nepal cricket team: T20 records and stats
The Nepal cricket team played its first T20 international (T20I) match in 2014. It was against Hong Kong in the first stage of the T20 World Cup, played at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Nepal won their maiden T20 International match by 80 runs, steered by Gyanendra Malla (48), captain Paras Khadka (41), Shakti Gauchan (3/9) and Basant Regmi (3/14).
Since then, Nepal have played over 50 matches in T20 International cricket, winning 34 and losing 23. One match ended in a no result.
The first big test for the Nepal cricket team came in its second match. They went up against Bangladesh and lost by eight wickets.
Their third match in the tournament was against Afghanistan, which Nepal beat by nine runs. Wicketkeeper Subash Khakurel scored Nepal’s first fifty in T20I in that match.
That was the first time Nepal played against a country that had featured in a Test match. Later, they played a few matches against Zimbabwe.
At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, Nepal will face the Indian cricket team. The fixture is the quarter-finals of the T20 cricket tournament of the continental event.
In their preceding match, however, Nepal set the record for the highest score in T20 cricket, when they hammered Mongolia for a mammoth 314/3 in 20 overs. It included a nine-ball fifty by Dipendra Singh Airee, which is the fastest 50 scored in the format of the game.
