India’s historic and record-breaking Asian Games 2023 campaign came to an end on Saturday. The Indian contingent won a record 107 medals - 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze - in Hangzhou, surpassing their previous best, set at 2018 Jakarta, by a whopping 37 medals.

Athletics brought India the most success with 29 medals. Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar Jena’s historic javelin 1-2, Parul Chaudhary and Avinash Sable’s double podiums, Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s shot put title, 4x400m relay teams’ success and Tejaswin Shankar’s national record-breaking decathlon silver were the highlight moments in track and field. 

Indian shooters also finished with an unprecedented 22 medals, including seven golds, at Hangzhou. Sift Kaur Samra and the men’s 10m air rifle time, headlined by Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, broke world records en route to their Asian Games 2023 success.

The Indian cricket and kabaddi teams also won gold medals at the Asian Games. While it was a success on debut for both cricket teams, the kabaddi teams reclaimed their throne after the 2018 Jakarta disappointment.

India clinched gold and also secured a Paris 2024 Olympics quota in men’s hockey. The women’s hockey team, however, took home bronze. 

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won India’s maiden badminton title at the continental meet. The men’s team, meanwhile, took silver and HS Prannoy, with a spirited display despite an injury, bagged the bronze medal.

At the squash courts, Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu won the first-ever mixed doubles gold on offer in Asian Games history. The men’s team also won the title while the women’s team settled for bronze. Saurav Ghosal added a fifth consecutive individual medal, a silver, to his Asian Games tally. Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh also secured a mixed doubles bronze.

India’s compound archers also clean swept the titles while recurve teams also bagged two medals. The nation also won its first equestrian gold in 41 years. Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won the mixed doubles tennis title.

Lovlina Borgohain won the silver medal and a Paris 2024 Olympic quota on her Asian Games debut. India, meanwhile, also secured three more boxing quotas for Paris via Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Parveen Hooda (57kg).

Aditi Ashok became the first Indian women’s golfer to win an Asian Games medal, fetching silver. Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee came into the limelight after beating reigning world champions Chen Meng and Yidi Wang on the way to winning the bronze medal at Hangzhou.

The Indian women’s regu also won their first-ever medal, a bronze, at the continental meet. Both Indian chess teams also won silver medals.

India also won medals in rowing, sailing, wushu, roller skating, canoe and bridge, wrapping up an eventful Asian Games 2023 for India.

Chess: Indian teams win silver medals

The Indian men's and women's chess teams secured silvers at the Asian Games 2023, the nation's final two medals at Hangzhou.

The Indian women's silver medal-winning team featured Vantika Agrawal, Savitha Shri Baskar, Harika Dronavalli, Koneru Humpy and Vaishali Ramesh Babu. China clinched the gold medal and Kazakhstan settled for bronze in the women's team chess competition at the 19th Asian Games.

IR Iran, India and Uzbekistan won the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men's team chess events. The Indian team consisted of Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Santosh Gujarathi, Arjun Kumar Erigaisi, Hari Krishna Pentala and Gukesh Dommanraju.

Wrestling: Deepak Punia settles for silver

Indian grappler Deepak Punia lost 0-10 against IR Iran's Hassan Yazdani in the men's freestyle 86kg final at the Asian Games 2023. A Commonwealth Games champion, Deepak Punia couldn't another gold to his tally but bagged the silver medal. Hassan Yazdani, meanwhile, successfully defended his Asian Games title, winning all his fours bouts on technical superiority.

The 24-year-old Deepak Punia defeated Bahrain's Magomed Magomed R Sharipov, Indonesia's Randa Riandesta, Japan's Shota Shirai and Uzbekistan's Javrail Shapiev on his way to the gold medal bout today.

Deepak Punia's silver is the first by an Indian wrestler at the 19th Asian Games. Sonam Malik, Sunil Kumar, Kiran Bishnoi and Aman Sehrawat won the bronze medal. The 2018 Asian Games champion Bajrang Punia failed to win a medal.

Hockey: India beat Japan in women's bronze match

India won 2-1 against Japan in the women's hockey bronze medal match at the Asian Games 2023. It is India's 104th medal at the Hangzhou, the 41st bronze.

Deepika (5') scored a penalty in the first quarter, while Yuri Nagai (30') equalized in the final moments of the second quarter. With the scores level in the fourth quarter, India's Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam (50') netted from a penalty corner, winning the match for the Savita Punia-led Indian team.

India had topped Pool A with three wins and a draw, scoring 33 goals in the process. However, they went down 0-4 against China, the Pool B runners up, in the women's hockey semi-final on Thursday.

The Indian women's hockey team added to their three previous bronze medals at the Asian. Meanwhile, Japan were the 2018 Asian Games champions, beating India in the gold medal match, but failed to bag a medal at Hangzhou.

Kabaddi: India reclaim men's title, beat Iran in final

The Indian men's kabaddi team beat IR Iran 33-29 in the gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023. The victory awarded India their eighth men's kabaddi title in nine editions at the Asian Games. It is also India's 28th gold medal in this edition of the continental meet, further extending a record medal tally.

IR Iran failed to defend their title and settled for the silver medal at Hangzhou.

India inflicted an all-out while winning three bonus points. Iran, meanwhile, took five bonus points and also made one all-out. While the match was closely contested India made a crucial all-out at the end of the first half and a three-point raid in the penultimate minute of the match to win the contest.

The Indian women's kabaddi team also clinched the gold medal earlier today, which was the nation's 100th medal at Hangzhou.

Cricket: India win the men's gold medal

The Indian men's cricket team, on their continental meet debut, bagged the gold medal at the Asian Games 2023. After rain interrupted play in the India vs Afghanistan men's cricket final, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Indian team won the title by virtue of their higher seeding. Afghanistan, meanwhile, settled for their third consecutive silver medal. India had also, earlier, clinched the women's cricket gold medal at Hangzhou.

The Indian spinners restricted Afghanistan to 112/5 after 18.2 overs, before rain stopped play, in the men's cricket gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023.

Seamers Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube scalped two early wickets to put Afghanistan on the backfoot. The Indian spin quartet of Ravi Bishnoi, R Sai Kishore, Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed, then, stopped the Afghanistan batters from scoring freely.

Ravi Bishnoi finished his four-over spell with a wicket while conceding only three runs per over. Bishnoi also inflicted a run out. Shahbaz Ahmed, too, picked up a wicket.

Shahidullah, meanwhile, remained unbeaten on a 43-ball 49 and captain Gulbadin Naib was not out on 27 runs off 24 balls.

Badminton: Historic men's doubles gold for Satwik-Chirag

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won 21-18, 21-16 against Choi Solgyu and Kim Wonho of the Republic of Korea in the men's doubles badminton gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023.

Satwik and Chirag, the world No. 3, duo scripted history by winning India's first-ever badminton gold in Asian Games history. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were also the 2022 Commonwealth Games champions.

Satwiksairaj Randireddy and Chirag Shetty beat pairs from Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea en route their Asian Games 2023 men's doubles title.

The Indian men's team, earlier at Hangzhou, played India's second-ever final at the continental meet but settled for silver. HS Prannoy also bagged a men's singles bronze.

Sport climbing: Climbers fail to make women's boulder and lead final

Indian climbers Saniya Farooque Shaikh and Shivani Charak finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in the women's boulder and lead semi-final. Only the top eight climbers made the final as Saniya and Shivani ended their campaign at the Asian Games 2023.

On Friday, India's Bharath Stephen Pereira Kamath and Aman Verma also failed to make the men's final after finishing ninth and 10th.

Canoe slalom: Hitesh Kewat ranked seventh in kayak final

Indian kayaker Hitesh Kewat finished seventh, clocking 130.34 seconds, in the men's kayak final at the Asian Games 2023. Earlier today, he finished 10th in the semi-final to make the final.

China's Quan Xin won the gold medal while Japan's Yuuki Tanaka and Chinese Taipei's Wu Shao-Hsuan bagged the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men's kayak final at Hangzhou.

Hockey: Women's hockey team face Japan in bronze medal match

The Indian women's hockey team lost 0-4 against China in the semi-final on Thursday. However, the Savita Punia-led India will play the 2018 Asian Games champions Japan in the bronze medal match today at 1:30 PM IST. In Asian Games history, India have won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals in women's hockey.

India scored 33 goals and conceded only once in the group stage at the Asian Games 2023. Japan, meanwhile, had scored 31 and conceded none before losing to the Republic of Korea on penalty shootouts in the semi-final.

On the other hand, the Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games while also securing a Paris 2024 Olympics berth on Friday.

Cricket: Ruturaj Gaikwad wins toss, India bowls first

India won the toss and elected to bowl first against Afghanistan in the men's cricket gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023. While the Indian men's cricket team are playing their first Asian Games final, Afghanistan are the two-time runners up at the continental meet.

Kabaddi: India vs Iran men's final on agenda

The Indian men's kabaddi team will take on IR Iran in the gold medal match today, in a repeat of the 2018 Asian Games men's kabaddi semi-final. The IND vs IRI match will begin at 12:30 PM IST today. Earlier, the Indian women's kabaddi team won the title.

Indian men had won seven successive gold medals before Iran pressed pause on the juggernaut in Jakarta. However, Pawan Sehrawat-led India have a chance to reclaim the title at Hangzhou in the final.

With Iranian players involved in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) in India, the players have come up against each other and even teamed up together on multiple occasions.

"In the match, the Iranian players are my opponents, they are not (my) friends. Out of the match they are my friends," Pawan Sehrawat stated.

Wrestling: Deepak Punia advances to gold medal bout

Indian grappler Deepak Punia beat Uzbekistan's Javrail Shapiev 4-3 in the men's freestyle 86kg semi-final at the Asian Games 2023. While the 24-year-old Deepak confirmed a medal by making the final, Shapiev, 26, will contest for the bronze medal.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympian Deepak Punia will face a stern test in the gold medal bout, taking on Rio 2016 Olympics champion Hassan Yazdani of IR Iran. The Iranian wrestler is also a three-time world champion - 2017, 2019 and 2021 - and the defending Asian Games champion in this category.

Soft tennis: Quarters exit ends India's campaign

Indian soft tennis player Jay Meena lost 1-4 against Chinese Taipei's in the men's singles quarter-final match at Hangzhou 2023. Raga Sri Kulandaivelu Manogarbabu, meanwhile, was ousted in the women's singles quarter-final by China's Ma Yue. 

Earlier, Aniket Chirag Patel lost in straight games against Chang Yu Sung of Chinese Taipei. 

India's soft tennis campaign at Hangzhou ended without a medal. In fact, no Indian has won a soft tennis medal in Asian Games history.

Roller skating: India finish fifth and sixth in ladies artistic final

Sai Samhitha Akula and Greeshma Dontara ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the ladies artistic single free skating final at the Asian Games 2023. 

Sai Samhitha scored 49.64 points - 16.95 in the short program and 32.69 in the long program. Greeshma, meanwhile, also scored the same total points at Hangzhou.

It marked the end of the roller skating campaign at the 19th Asian Games, wherein India bagged two bronze medals - men's and women's speed skating 3000m relay.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulates India's 100-medal achievement

Earlier today, India clinched their 100th medal at the Asian Games 2023, becoming only the fourth nation to achieve the feat at the continental meet. The Indian contingent have won 25 gold, 35 silver and 40 bronze medals at Hangzhou, so far.

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar congratulated the Indian athletes on their medal-laden return from the 19th Asian Games.

Volleyball: India pips Hong Kong China for ninth place

The Indian women's volleyball team won 3-2 against Hong Kong China in the 9th-10th place classification match at the Asian Games 2023. India won the first, fourth and fifth sets, with the total points at 103-96, securing a ninth-placed finish.

India finished tenth in women's volleyball at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. A sixth-placed finish at the 1982 Asian Games is their best, so far. The Indian team, meanwhile, have won three South Asian Games women's volleyball titles.

Wrestling: Deepak Punia storms into semis

Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Deepak Punia won 7-3 against Japanese grappler Shota Shirai, featuring in his second Asian Games, in the men's 86kg quarter-final bout at the Asian Games 2023. A Tokyo 2020 Olympian, Deepak Punia will now wrestle for a spot in the gold medal bout later today.

Deepak Punia had beaten Indonesia's Randa Riandesta 11-0 and Bahrain's Magomed Magomed R Sharipov 3-2 in the pre-quarterfinals and qualification rounds, respectively, at Hangzhou.

Yash won his opening bout defeating Cambodia's Chheang Chhoeun 10-0 in the men's freestyle 74kg pre-quarterfinal. However, he was defeated in the quarter-final by Tajikistan's Magomet Evloev 12-1 in the quarter-final.

Vicky, on the other hand, lost 10-0 to Alisher Yergali, a four-time Asian Championships medallist, in the men's freestyle 97kg pre-quarterfinal.

In the men's freestyle 125kg, former Asian champion Aiaal Lazarev sealed a victory on technical superiority against India's Sumit.

Cricket: Indian men's team aim gold on debut

The Indian men's cricket team beat Nepal and Bangladesh in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively, en route to making the gold medal match. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh and R Sai Kishore delivered match-winning performances for Team India.

India will face Afghanistan, who beat Pakistan in the semi-final, in the men's cricket final today at 11:30 AM IST. While the Indian women's cricket team clinched gold at Hangzhou, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Co. can help India sweep the cricket titles.

Canoe slalom: Hitesh Kewat makes men's kayak final

India's Hitesh Kewat, featuring in the men's kayak slalom semi-final, clocked 123.68 seconds, finishing 10th and securing a place in the final at the Asian Games 2023. Shubham Kewat, on the other hand, ranked 11th in the semi-final.

Only one kayaker per NOC could advance into the final as per the Asian Games rules. Hence, Uzbekistan's Shakhobiddin Boltaboev and Japan's Kosuke Saito did not make the medal race despite ranking in the top six as their compatriots had finished higher in the semi-finals.

The men's kayak slalom final at Hangzhou will begin at 11:52 AM IST today.

Kabaddi: Indian women's team clinch gold

The Indian women's kabaddi team won 26-25 against Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023. India won their third women's kabaddi title at the continental meet while Chinese Taipei upgraded their 2018 bronze to silver at Hangzhou.

Following the 34-34 tie in their campaign opener between the two sides, the women's kabaddi final, too, was a closely contested encounter. Chinese Taipei inflicted an all-out on the Indian team in the second half, however, India outscored them in the raiding department.

Meanwhile, India vs the Islamic Republic of Iran is on the cards in the men's kabaddi final at the 19th Asian Games, starting at 12:30 PM IST today.

Ju-jitsu: Three jujitsukas ousted in elimination rounds

India's ju-jitsu campaign at the Asian Games 2023 concluded today as Uma Maheshwar Reddy, Kiran Kumari and Amarjeet Singh were knocked out in the elimination rounds. Indian jujitsukas failed to win any medals at Hangzhou.

Uma Maheshwar Reddy and Amarjeet Singh lost to Thailand's Sooknatee Suntra and Mongolia's Altangerel Bayarkhuu, respectively, in their men's -85kg round of 32 bouts.

Kiran Kumari, meanwhile, went down against Khongorzul Bayarmaa of Mongolia in the women's -63kg round of 16.

Archery: Indians win all five compound gold medals

An all-Indian men's final between Ojas Pravin Deotale and Abhishek Verma completed a compound archery gold clean sweep at the Asian Games 2023. Ojas Pravin Deotale beat Abhishek Verma 149-147 in the men's individual gold medal match. It is the third gold medal for Ojas Deotale while Abhishek Verma finishes with a gold and a silver.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam won 149-145 against So Chae-won of the Republic of Korea in the women's individual compound gold medal match at the Asian Games 2023. While Jyothi shot a nine on her first arrow, the 14 remaining arrows were all 10s, equalling the Asian Games record score, once again.

Indian compound archer Aditi Swami, meanwhile, beat Indonesia's Ratih Zilizati Fadhly 146-140, securing the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023. Aditi, India's first-ever individual world champion, scored a perfect 30 at the fourth end while shooting 29 in the others. Indian athletes have now won 99 medals at Hangzhou.

Earlier at the 19th Asian Games, the Indian men's, women's and mixed compound archers won the gold medal. On the other hand, the women's recurve team settled for bronze and the men's recurve team bagged silver on Friday.

India will take on two-time finalists Afghanistan in the men’s cricket final, aiming to emulate the gold medal-winning women’s team at Hangzhou.

Kabaddi at the Asian Games 2023 concludes today with two eye-catching finals - India vs Chinese Taipei in the women’s competition, followed by India vs Iran in the men’s. Both Indian teams will take the mat to retake their Asian Games titles.

In badminton, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are the first Indian men’s doubles pair to make the final. The world No. 3 Indian duo can clinch India’s first Asian Games badminton gold if they win against Choi Solgyu and Kim Won-ho of the Republic of Korea.

Compound archery has delivered three gold medals, so far, with a clean sweep on offer today. Ojas Pravin Deotale and Abhishek Verma will feature in an all-Indian men’s individual final while Jyothi Surekha Vennam takes aim in the women’s.

The Savita Punia-led Indian women’s hockey team will face a Japanese test for the bronze medal. India are also in the medal hunt in chess with both the men’s and women’s teams in the silver medal spots ahead of the final round.

Deepak Punia, a Tokyo Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion, will take the mat today as four Indian grapplers will wrestle for medals on the final day of wrestling at the Asian Games 2023.

India will play Hong Kong China in the women’s volleyball classification 9-10 match.

Medal events in canoe slalom, ju-jitsu, roller skating, soft tennis and sport climbing are also on the agenda.
