A 10-member Indian contingent was in action at the Asian Games 2023 soft tennis in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from from October 3 to October 7 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Tennis Centre.
The Indian soft tennis team for the continental showpiece featured five men and as many women. Soft tennis at the 2023 Asian Games included five medal events - men’s team, women’s team, men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles.
India's best results came in the singles events, where Jay Meena in the men's singles and Raga Sri Kulandaivelu Manogarbabu in the women's singles reached the quarter-finals. In the team events and mixed doubles, the Indian soft tennis players were knocked out in the preliminary rounds.
The soft tennis events at Asian Games 2023 followed the best-of-seven games format for singles. For doubles, it was best-of-nine games.
Soft tennis was initially introduced at the 1994 Asian Games after featuring as a demonstration sport four years earlier in Beijing. This edition marked India’s third appearance in the soft tennis event at the Asian Games. At the 2010 and 2018 editions, Indian players failed to advance to the knockout stages.
Jay Meena, Aniket Chirag Patel and Rohit Dhiman participated in their second Asian Games, having previously represented India at Jakarta 2018.
Similar to tennis, soft tennis is a racket game played on a court divided into two halves by a net. Soft tennis employs soft rubber balls instead of the hard yellow balls used in tennis. The aim of the player is to hit the ball within the lines and stop the opponent from returning it.
