Mikaela Shiffrin has a great chance to move clear of fellow American Lindsey Vonn's record as the most successful women's alpine skier in World Cup racing starting from this Friday (20 January).

The American will compete in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, in three World cup races from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 January. Shiffrin will be in action in women's Downhill on Friday and Saturday, and Super-G on Sunday, needing just one win to move clear of the mark she currently holds with fellow American Vonn.

Shiffrin's 83rd win would move her alone at the top of the list for female skiers, and second on the all-time list with just Ingemar Stenmark (86) ahead of her.

While she has been more successful in the technical events of Slalom and Giant Slalom, Shiffrin does have three Downhill race wins to her name and five victories in Super Giant Slalom (Super-G) races, the last one in St. Moritz, Switzerland, one month ago. She also has a decent record in Cortina, where she won four medals including combined gold at the 2021 World Championships, and also has an FIS World Cup win, which came in the Super-G discipline in January 2019. The American also stepped on the Downhill podium (third) in 2018.

The 27-year-old tops the overall World Cup standings with 1,195 points, with Petra Vlhova second on 796.

This season, Shiffrin is seeking a fifth overall crown which would put her second on the all-time winner's list behind Austria's Annemarie Moser-Pröll who has six titles to her name.
