Play has been completed on day one of the 2023 All England Open with the top badminton players from across the globe gathered in Birmingham, England, UK.

First held in 1899, this is the 114th edition of the world's oldest badminton tournament which is now one of four BWF World Tour Super 1000 events.

Reigning men's world and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen survived an almighty scare in his opening match on Tuesday (14 March) against an inspired Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, China.

No defending men's singles All England champion has ever gone out in the first round, and the world number one looked in danger of making unwanted history as he dropped the first game.

Lee led 8-2 and 11-4 at the interval before eventually taking it 21-19. But the Dane won the second 21-15 - including an incredible net shot for 19-14 - to take the match into a decider.

And after the 26-year-old underdog had hauled himself level from 4-0 down, Axelsen asserted his superiority before sealing victory 19-21, 21-15, 21-11 in a highly entertaining 60 minutes.

Singapore's eighth seed and 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew was an early casualty, going out 21-16, 16-21, 21-7 to Zhao Junpeng of the People's Republic of China.

Fifth seed Chou Tien-chen was another man to exit on the opening day, falling 21-18, 21-19 to India's 2022 All England runner-up Lakshya Sen.

Tokyo 2020 gold medallist and 2019 All England champion Chen Yufei was made to work in her opener in the women's singles, beating Canada's Michelle Li 22-20, 21-14.

But two-time winner Okuhara Nozomi crashed out to Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong.

With strapping on her right calf, Japan's 2017 world champion clearly struggled with Chochuwong winning 21-11, 21-15 to avenge her defeat in the 2021 All England final.

The 2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon also fell at the first hurdle, going down 21-16, 21-17 to fellow Thai Lalinrat Chaiwan.
