Aditi Ashok finishes tied 61st at Women's British Open, Sweden's Anna Nordqvist wins title
Ashok finished with 7 over at the British Open
Aditi Ashok had an unimpressive outing at the Women's British Open as she finished tied 61 with 7-over.
The star Indian golfer, who made headlines at Tokyo 2020 after narrowly missing out on a medal, made three bogeys, on the 10th, 14th and 15th holes, and one double-bogey on the second hole. Whereas, she could score just two birdies on the sixth and 11th holes at the challenging Carnoustie Golf Links course.
However, she had a promising start to the competition, finishing tied 23rd after round one, carding 1-under. She scored four birdies and three bogeys and between the 10th and 14th hole she had a fine run which propelled her to the 23rd spot.
But as the tournament progressed her form dropped. Ashok slipped 36 places and finished 58th after the second round. She dropped shots on the seventh, 13th, and 16th holes and managed a score of 2-over 74 in round 2, and barely managed to make the cut. She had previously mentioned that the 18th hole was a tricky one that challenged her abilities.
"Obviously, the finishing stretch at Carnoustie is pretty difficult but I had a 3 wood coming into the last 3 holes, managed pars on 16, 17 but bogeyed the 18. But it was still a good round, I think. The 18th was the second-toughest hole on the course. Obviously, a dropped shot is never good but I think it was okay,” she said.
However, in spite of finishing tied at 61st, she will earn $13,680.
Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist shot a 3-under to finish at 12-under, winning the major title by one stroke. This was her first title after 1,435 days since she won the 2017 Amundi Evian Championship in a playoff. After this win, she joined the elite list of Annika Sorenstam (10) and Laura Davies (four) to win three or more majors by a European woman.
