She first became interested in golf after hearing crowds cheering at a nearby golf course while at a restaurant with her family. Her parents encouraged her to pursue the sport. "My parents and I started learning golf at the same time, when I was five years old. It was just a weekend activity that we could do as a family, but I really liked it and wanted to learn and play more. I liked the fact that golf was an individual sport. Each day was a different experience and that's what kept me interested, as I never got bored with the game as a child." (, 12 Mar 2021;, 24 Jan 2017;, 09 Jun 2014)

General Interest

She says her participation in the golf tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro helped to raise interest and awareness for both herself and the sport in her home country. "I read somewhere that the Google searches for golf from India were huge after that [the Olympic Games]. Just seeing the impact it had and the exposure it got at the time was a big deal for me. Cricket is our [India's] sport. We are a cricket-crazy country. After that, the Olympics are most important. A lot of people who didn't know anything about golf watched the Olympics. Ever since, I get little girls running up to me saying, 'She played in the Olympics. I want to be just like her'. It's inspiring. It was the whole idea behind getting golf in the Olympics. In India, they write about me now even in random LET [Ladies European Tour] events. I'm 'the girl who was leading in the Olympics'. I wish I would have finished better in the Olympics, but it was a great experience." (, 18 Sep 2020, 10 May 2020;, 28 Nov 2016)

In 2017 she became the first Indian golfer to play on the LPGA Tour. (, 21 Apr 2021)

She became the first Indian female golfer to play at the Olympic Games when she competed at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. At age 18 years and 144 days, her participation in 2016 also made her the youngest female golfer to compete at the Olympic Games. (, 18 Sep 2020, 10 May 2020; SportsDeskOnline, 14 May 2021)

She became the first Indian golfer to win a Ladies European Tour [LET] title when she triumphed at the 2016 Hero Women's Indian Open in Gurgaon. (, 11 Oct 2017;, 13 Nov 2016; SportsDeskOnline, 14 May 2021)
