The 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) comes to a close this weekend as the city of Pontevedra, Spain, hosts the seventh and final round of the series.

Both the men's and women's competition look like they will go down to the wire, though it's important to keep in mind that the race winners may not be crowned "world champion": that title is awarded to the WTCS points leader at the end of the race.

Below you'll find our preview of the event, including the schedule, big names to keep an eye on and how to watch the races.

Men

Double Olympic medallist Alex Yee (GBR) holds a slender 57-point lead over Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Hayden Wilde (NZL), with Vasco Vilaca (POR) best positioned to seize the crown should both men stumble in Spain.

Yee and Wilde have dominated the 2023 WTCS, winning five races between them. Yee, who won silver and gold in the men's individual and mixed relay events respectively at Tokyo 2020, has three wins under his belt, including the Paris Triathlon Test Event in August.

A spot on the podium for Yee - provided he finishes ahead of Wilde - will be enough for the 25-year-old to become the first British man to become world champion in a decade.

Women

As is the case in the men's field, the women's competition also appears to be a two-horse race, with Beth Potter (GBR) and Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) set to go head-to-head this weekend.

While Potter has three series wins to Beaugrand's two, it is the Tokyo 2020 mixed relay bronze medallist who is currently ahead in the rankings (by a meagre 32 points) due to her four counting results coming in higher-weighted formats. But the gap is so small between the two that for Emma Lombardi (FRA) to be crowned champion, she would have to win a first-ever WTCS race and have both Potter and Beaugrand finish outside of the top five.
