Yury Melikhov competed in two Olympic Games for the USSR. But unlike many other Soviet riders of the era, he had a long career competing in other races. Melikhov rode the Peace Race four times (1959, 1961, 1962, 1965), winning it in 1961 and placing second in 1962. He rode in the World Championships on the road in 1960, 1963, and 1964, placing fourth in the 1960 amateur road race, helping the Soviet Union to a bronze in the 1963 team time trial, and placing 51st at the 1964 amateur road race. Melikhov road the Tour de l’Avenir in 1963, placing 49th. He was Soviet road champion in 1961.
