Thor Nielsen had the following podium finishes at the Flatwater World Championships: 1st 1993 K1 10000 m, 1st 1994 K2 1000 m (with Jesper Møllegaard Staal), 2nd 1987 K2 10000 m (with the non-Olympian Lars Koch), 2nd 1993 K1 1000 m, 3rd 1985 K4 10000 m (with the non-Olympians Henrik Christensen, Lars Koch, and Brian Kragh).
