Matthew Richardson’s Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 didn’t go as planned but life turned a full circle three years later at Paris 2024.

Richardson won three medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics - two silver and a bronze. However, just a few days after the Summer Games ended, Richardson announced his decision to shift to Great Britain, a move approved by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).

Matthew Richardson was born in Kent, England on April 14, 1999. He was nine when his family moved to Warwick, a suburb in Western Australia, due to his father’s work.

In his early years, Richardson was recognised as one of the best young talents in gymnastics. However, an elbow injury meant he could not pursue that path and shifted to track cycling.

After beginning his journey with the Midland Cycling Club, Richardson was soon recruited into the Western Australian Institute of Sport.

Richardson soon earned dual citizenship and was eligible to compete for Australia. In 2019, with the World Championships closing in, Richardson joined Cycling Australia’s Podium Potential Academy in South Australia, earning him his first shot at representing the country internationally.
