Because Korea was, at the time, occupied by Japanese forces, his participation at the Olympic Games was recorded under the Japanese name of Ri Keikan. Lee KyuHwan was a member of the Korean Fist Boxing Club who represented Japan at the Olympic Games Berlin 1936 in the welterweight division. His title in this class at the All Japan Championships claimed earlier that year earned him a place on the Olympic team. In 1937, he placed first at the Meiji Jingu Games. At home in Korea Lee won first ever title in boxing in this division.
