Josef Haunzwickel was Austrian champion in pole vault in 1936, 1938-40, and 1946-48. He placed sixth at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, and also took part at the 1939 Universiade, placing fifth. After the “Anschluss” of Austria to the Third Reich he became German Champion in 1938-39, and was runner-up in 1940-41. In 1921 Haunzwickel started his sports career as a gymnast but changed to athletics in 1930. He studied physical education and sports education and earned his doctorate in 1941.
