Macready came from an entertainment family, as his father was a producer/director, his mother was an actress, and his grandfather was the well-known actor, George Macready.

Macready attended both the University of Colorado and the University of Tennessee, studying media management and communications. He and Olympic teammate John Roethlisberger owned and operated FLIPFEST, a gymnastics camp on Lake Frances in Crossville, Tennessee.
