John Foster competed as a rifle shooter at both the 1960 and 1968 Olympics. He finished seventh in free rifle at both Olympics, and just missed a medal in three-position small-bore rifle in 1968, placing fourth. In 1968 he was in the US Army, stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Foster attended the University of Montana, graduating in 1958 with a degree in forestry. He won two individual World Championships, in moving target rifle shooting in 1961 and kneeling free rifle shooting in 1966, in which he set the world record of 391 from 400 possible. His daughter, Jean, also shot small-bore rifle for the US at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.
