Jean de Mas Latrie competed as a sabre fencer at the 1908 Olympics, and then returned in 1912 to participate in the first Olympic modern pentathlon event, finishing 16th. De Mas Latrie was a career military officer who reached the rank of captain. He served with the 15e Chasseurs à Cheval, eventually earning the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre. He was attached to the British Army on 5 September 1914 when he was killed while on a reconnaissance mission in Rebais, Seine-et-Marne.
