Ingrid Butts started as an alpine skier but switched to cross-country in the ninth grade. After being chosen as an alternate to the 1988 US Winter Olympic team, she competed at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics. Butts was US Champion in 1991 and that was her best year, as she won three Great American Ski Chase series races and had four victories in the Canada Cup. She later became a ski instructor in Crested Butte, Colorado. Butts’ husband, Kendall, coached the US disabled cross-country ski team.
