Race walker Beate Anders was married to Bernd Gummelt, silver medalist in the 50 km walk at the 1990 European Championships. She started in three consecutive Olympic Games 1992 (16th at 10 km), 1996 (disqualified in the 10 km), and 2000 (19th at 20 km). She was also a member of World Championship teams in 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995, and 1997, winning indoor titles in 1989, 1991 and 1993. Domestically Anders won seven titles in East Germany and another 24 in reunified Germany, and became the outstanding German female race walker of her era. Gummelt was educated as a merchandiser but later worked as a school teacher in Neuruppin.
