Greg Burgess specialized in the individual medley, winning a silver medal in the 200 IM at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also competed in that event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, finishing sixth in the final. Burgess won silver in the 200 IM at the 1994 World Championships. He won golds in the 200 IM at the 1991 Universiade, and in the 4x200 free relay at the 1993 Pan Pacific Championships, and the 1995 Pan American Games. Burgess attended the University of Florida, where he won the 200 and 400 IMs in 1993 and 1994, setting two American records in each event. He received 12 All-American honors before graduating in 1994.
After college Burgess joined the US Marine Corps in 1997. He served two tours duty in Iraq, and was chef de mission for the US team at the 2009 and 2010 CISM (International Military Games). Promoted to major, he was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
