Gianbattista Capretti fought as an amateur internationally 26 times, winning 19 bouts. After his 1968 Olympic appearance, he earned his most important amateur medal when he took bronze at the 1969 European Championships. Capretti then won the light-welterweight division at the 1971 Mediterranean Games, and in 1972 took silver at the World Military Championships (CISM). After his appearance at the 1972 Olympics he elected to turn professional.
Capretti fought from July 1973 through 1978 as a professional. Fighting almost exclusively in Italy, he ended with a career record of 21 wins (11 by KO), 2 losses, and 1 draw. In March 1977 Capretti fought Bruno Freschi for the Italian super-lightweight title, but lost by TKO. He never fought for any other major titles.
