Captain Frederick Bertram Barton, known as Derick, was educated at Eton College, and then the Sandhurst Military Academy, before becoming a lieutenant with the 17th/21st Lancers. After service in World War II he retired as an honorary captain and settled in the Republic of Ireland. Between 1966-68 he was president of the Royal Dublin Society. Barton’s son Chris won a silver medal with the Great Britain rowing eights at the 1948 Olympics.
