Pentathlete Burglinde Pollak won two bronze medals at the 1972 München and the 1976 Montréal Olympics. Four years later in Moskva she placed sixth. At the European Championships she earned three silver medals in 1971, 1974, and 1978. Nationally she collected East German titles in 1970-71, 1973-74, and 1979. Her collection was completed by three more indoor titles. In her career Pollak also set three world records in 1970 and two in 1973. She retired when the pentathlon was replaced by the heptathlon in 1981.

By profession Pollak was educated as a data processor, but later worked as a physiotherapist. Many documents on doping in the former GDR became public after reunification, and her name was found in the list of doped athletes.
