Bjarte Engen Vik was twice the overall World Cup champion in Nordic combined, winning the season title in 1997/98 and 1998/99. In all he won 24 World Cup competitions in Nordic combined. Vik competed at the 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics, winning four Olympic medals, with gold in both Nordic combined events in 1998, after a bronze in the individual in 1994.

Vik’s record was even more impressive at the World Championships, winning eight medals, with five golds and three silvers. His World titles were in the team in 1997, 1999, and 2001, in the sprint in 1999, and in the individual in 2001. At Holmenkollen Vik won seven titles, winning the individual Gundersen for five consecutive years (1996-2000), adding sprint titles in 1997 and 2000. He is one of only four Nordic combined athletes to win the Holmenkollen Nordic combined individual five times, along with Lauritz Bergendahl, Johan Grøttumsbraaten , and Rauno Miettinen. Vik’s seven victories at Holmenkollen is the most ever for a Nordic combined competitor. In 1997 he was given the Holmenkollen Medal, sharing it with Stefania Belmondo and Bjørn Dæhlie.
