Andrew Lewis competed at the 1992 Olympics but lost his first match. He won a silver medal at the 1990 Central American and Caribbean Games but had more success as a professional, turning pro in February 1993. In 2001 Lewis became the first Guyanese to win a professional world title when he beat American James Page to win the World Boxing Association welterweight championship. He lost the title in March 2002 when he was defeated by Ricardo Mayorga by TKO in the second round. In February 2003 Lewis fought for the World Boxing Organization welterweight title against Antonio Margarito but again lost by an early TKO. He fought only sporadically after that loss and retired for good in 2008, with a final record of 23 wins, 4 losses, and 2 draws.

In 2005-07 Lewis fought three bouts against Denny Dalton for the Guyanese super-welterweight title. In the second bout, in 2006, Lewis had to retire after the 7th round to urgently use the restroom, which he blamed on a pre-fight milkshake. The first bout had been a draw, but Lewis won the rubber match in 2007. In May 2015 Lewis was riding a bicycle in Guyana when he was struck by a motorist and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
