WST Rome Park World Championships 2023: Hiraki Cocona on top in women's quarter-finals

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist saved her best until the last to secure her place in the World Championship semi-final ahead of Raicca Ventura, Hinano Kusaki and Dora Varella.

Hiraki Cocona soared to the top of the leaderboard with a 86.12 run to come out on top of the women’s quarter-finals at WST Rome Park World Championships 2023 on Friday (6 October).

The 15-year-old Japanese skateboarder was outside the final cut until her last attempt launched her into first place ahead of Brazil's Raicca Ventura (84.32) and her compatriot Kusaki Hinano (84.18).

Joining the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist through to the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier, streaming live from tomorrow on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com, are Olympic champion Yosozumi Sakura, Dora Varella and Australia duo Ruby and Arisa Trew (not related).

The United States flashed its impressive depth again with five skaters advancing. Bryce Wettstein, Grace Marhoefer, Minna Stess, Ruby Lilley and Lillian Erickson will all feature in the semi-final.

The World Championships, being hosted by the Spot Skatepark in Ostia, is doubling as a qualifier for Paris 2024 with crucial ranking points for the upcoming Games on the line in addition to the world titles.

The skateboarding will continue tomorrow with the men's and women’s semi-finals beginning at 15:35 (UTC+2).
