World Skate Games Italia 2024: Hampus Winberg scores first place in men's park skateboarding open qualifier

Hampus Winberg closed the men’s park skateboarding open qualifiers on top of the pile after a busy day of action at the World Skate Games Italia 2024.

Competing in the final heat on Thursday (19 September), the 18-year-old put down an authoritative 87.14 score on his first run attempt to qualify for the quarter-finals in first place, ahead of Australia's Ash Wilcomes (83.46) in second.

Winberg was one of several Olympians advancing their causes at the world championship event in Ostia.

Viktor Solmunde, Keefer Wilson, Pedro Barros, and Luigi Cini were among those from the Paris 2024 cohort who booked their place in the next round, qualifying in third, fourth, ninth, and 19th respectively.

Just as in the women's event, Brazil can boast some impressive numbers with eight skaters set to appear in the men's quarters.

Seven punched their tickets via the open qualifier, with the pre-seeded Augusto Akio set to join them after entering directly in the quarter-final due to his Olympic bronze medal from Paris.

The world championship title decider will continue tomorrow (Friday 20 September) with the women's and men's quarter-finals, where 32 will be cut to form a top 16 ahead of the semi-finals.
