Naia Laso laid down an early marker of intent as she led a party of 32 qualifiers into the women's park skateboarding quarter-finals at the World Skate Games Italia 2024 on Wednesday (18 September).
With defending world champion Hiraki Cocona and Olympic medallists Sky Brown and Arisa Trew choosing not to skate at the contest in Rome, the opportunity to step up is available to those competing at The Spot skatepark in Ostia.
Fifteen-year-old Laso, a Paris 2024 Olympic finalist, certainly didn't wait for the invitation: putting down an 82.00 on her opening run before upgrading it to 83.08 on her second to finish first out of the 49 skaters in action.
Coming in just behind the Spaniard were fellow Olympians Raicca Ventura (81.08) and Kusaki Hinano (77.14).
The Brazilian and Japanese skaters were both one of several from their respective countries to book their place in the next round of the world championship event.
Ventura was joined by five compatriots including Yndiara Asp, Dora Varella, Sofia Godoy, Fernanda Tonissi and 12-year-old Helena Laurino.
Kusaki, meanwhile, will be accompanied by the newly minted world vert silver medallist Hasegawa Mizuho, Sugawara Mei and Kaihara Asahi.
The women's park contest will continue on Friday with the quarter-finals. Before then, the men will drop in for an open qualifier on Thursday.
