Two huge footballing nations come head to head this week in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
Five-time World Cup winners Brazil will host the reigning World Champions, Argentina, at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday 21st November at a local time of 21:30. The fixture will kick-off in the early hours of Wednesday 22nd November for those in Europe.
FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification for the CONMEBOL region began in September 2023 and will run until September 2025.
There are ten participating countries from the region - Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela - but only six spaces available to the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals.
Each country will play the nine others home and away in a round robin format. After all fixtures have been played, the top six will qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 finals in America, Canada and Mexico.
The nation in seventh place will go onto feature in the FIFA Play-Off Tournament against five teams from other regions in a bid for the two remaining places at the finals.
CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualification: As it stands
Five matchdays have already taken place and as it stands, Argentina are in first place with twelve points. Uruguay are currently in second with ten points, and Colombia sit in third with nine points. Brazil find themselves in fifth place with only seven points, and Venezuela sit in fourth with eight.
Argentina were unbeaten in the qualification process until Friday 17 November, 2023 when they lost 2-0 to Uruguay.
Brazil has only one two out of five games, as they drew 1-1 with Venezuela and lost to both Uruguay and Colombia.
With plenty more qualification fixtures to come it is still all to play for, however both Argentina and Brazil will be eager to outplay the other in this fiery Superclásico at the Maracana. Brazil are amid an injury struggle and will be without the likes of Neymar, Casemiro and Vinicius Junior, however we could see 17-year-old Endrick feature following his call up to the squad.
Messi is expected to start and will be looking to right the wrongs of his nation’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay earlier this week.
