Football: UEFA Women's Champions League preview, full schedule and how to watch live
The group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League is well underway, with current champions Barcelona scoring a 5-0 win in the opening group stage fixtures. Olympics.com looks ahead to the remaining five group stage games.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League plays host to the best footballing talent in Europe.
From eight-time winners Lyon to Spanish giants Barcelona, the competition features the crème de la crème of European talent - and the first round of fixtures are already underway, having kicked off on November 14th, 2023.
The group stage of this season’s edition features sixteen teams drawn into four groups of four, playing each other home and away. Only eight teams will qualify for the knockout stage.
Teams that top their group or come second will automatically qualify for the knockout round, and the remaining eight will crash out of the competition.
UEFA Women’s Champions League: Matchday 2 preview
Barcelona and Lyon dominated in the first round of group stage fixtures, with the Blaugrana securing a 5-0 over Portuguese champions Benfica and Lyon managing a 9-0 win over Slavia Praha.
Current Champions of Europe, Barcelona, could go three points clear in Group A if they overcome four-time Champions League winners Eintracht Frankfurt in Matchday 2. Frankfurt have a strong history in Europe and could pose as Barcelona’s biggest threat within Group A.
Lyon will host Norwegian side Brann who stormed through the Women’s Champions League qualifiers without conceding a goal, and there is no doubt that eight-time European champions Lyon will be their strongest test yet.
Group C features two fierce matchups in Matchday 2, with PSG taking on Frauen-Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Ajax traveling to the home of Serie A Women champions, Roma.
Despite a convincing win over Manchester United in the qualifiers, PSG’s Group Stage campaign got off to a bleak start with a 2-0 loss to the Eredivisie Vrouwen champions, Ajax. With a home advantage, the French side will be looking to right their wrongs against German giants Bayern Munich in Matchday 2.
Left scolded by two controversial refereeing decisions, Women’s Super League champions Chelsea will be hungry to secure their first Group Stage win against Paris FC.
The English side drew 2-2 to Real Madrid in Matchday 1 after their stoppage time winner was ruled offside. Manager Emma Hayes called the decisions 'embarrassing’ and felt that her side had ‘been robbed of what should have been a 3-1 game’ following the offside decision and a Real Madrid penalty that Hayes felt should have been a free kick.
It was also announced last week that Hayes will depart Chelsea to take up the managerial vacancy at the US Women's National Team. Having won six domestic titles during her eleven years as Chelsea boss, Hayes will be desperate to finish her tenure by securing the club’s first ever Champions League trophy.
