Triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, a Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist, along with long jumper Jeswin Aldrin, will represent India at the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 in Glasgow, Scotland from March 1 to 3.
The two Indian athletes qualified for the 19th edition of the World Athletics Indoor Championships courtesy of their breaching the entry standards in their respective events. Chithravel and Aldrin also hold India’s national records in outdoor triple jump and long jump, respectively.
Aldrin, who won the silver medal at the Asian Indoor Championships last year, will be the first Indian athlete in action when he lines up for the long jump final on Saturday morning (local time). Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou, the reigning Olympic and world champion, will be out to defend his indoor title in the men’s long jump.
Chithravel, an Asian Games bronze medallist and silver medallist at the Asian Indoor Championships last year, will be in action in the triple jump final in the afternoon session on Saturday.
The Indian athlete will compete in a strong field led by the 2023 outdoor world champion Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso and defending champion Lazaro Martinez of Cuba. The Glasgow meet also includes 10 of the 12 finalists from last year’s outdoor world championships.
Several Indian athletes who had made the cut have opted to skip the meet. This includes Asian indoor champions Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 60m hurdles) and Tajinder Pal Singh Toor (men’s shot put).
Around 650 athletes from over 130 countries have entered the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 in Glasgow. Medals will be on offer in 26 events over three days.
India have never won a medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships since it started in 1985.
