Sha'Carri Richardson, in her debut World Championships, went under 11 seconds as she posted the fastest time of the 100m heats at track and field's 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday (20 August).

After her heat was delayed due to a false start, the American led from the front to ease home in a rapid 10.92. She was one of three runners to go sub-11 on a blisteringly hot day in the Hungarian capital.

Julien Alfred of St Lucia led the way in the opening heat, clocking a 10.99 to begin proceedings. Poland's Ewa Swoboda was the third sub-11 runner at 10.98.

Reigning world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, running in her only individual event in Budapest, was a comfortable qualifier from Heat 7. The Jamaican, sporting her hair dyed red, came home in 11.01, while her teammate Shericka Jackson was also an automatic qualifier, winning Heat 4 in 11.06.

"I'm feeling good after getting the first round out of the way," Fraser-Pryce said in the mixed zone afterwards. "First one is usually a little bit mix and match, but I think I was able to have a good one.

"I felt good. It has been a challenging season, but nothing that I'm not used to and for me, I guess I'm a warrior. I love the challenges and I show up for them. Things are not always gonna be 100, and you just have to find the strength to push through and not kill yourself."

Great Britain's 2019 world champion Dina Asher-Smith also made it through to the semi-finals, finishing second in her heat in 11.04 seconds.
