Ten Olympic champions including Mondo Duplantis, Ryan Crouser, Nafi Thiam, and Tara Davis-Woodhall have been long-listed for World Athletics' Field Athlete of the Year 2024 awards.
As part of a revamped voting procedure for the 2024 World Athletics Awards, the global track and field federation has unveiled the five male and five female nominees for Field Athlete of the Year, with two finalists in each category also progressing to be considered for the overall World Athlete of the Year awards.
The long-listed athletes are, in alphabetical order by last name:
Women's Field Athlete of the Year 2024 – nominees
- Valarie Allman (USA): Allman won her second straight Olympic title in the discus this year in addition to taking the event's Diamond League crown.
- Tara Davis-Woodhall (USA): Davis-Woodhall took home Paris 2024 long jump gold – later joined on the top step of the podium in the French capital by her Paralympian husband Hunter, completing a golden double for the Woodhalls – as well as world indoor gold in 2024.
- Nina Kennedy (AUS): The reigning joint-world champion in pole vault edged out her fellow world title holder Katie Moon in Paris to become Olympic champion, before also winning at the Diamond League Final.
- Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR): The Ukrainian has fond memories of Paris this year. As well as winning high jump gold at the Olympic Games, barely a month earlier in the French capital, Mahuchikh soared to a new world record 2.10m.
- Nafissatou Thiam (BEL): History-making Thiam won a remarkable third consecutive heptathlon gold medal at the Olympic Games, adding to golds at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. In doing so, she became the first woman to accomplish the feat.
Men's Field Athlete of the Year 2024 – nominees
- Ryan Crouser (USA): The world record holder won his third straight Olympic title in shot put, the first man to do so in that event. He also won world indoor gold in Glasgow in March, his first world indoor title.
- Jordan Alejandro Díaz Fortún (ESP): In addition to winning his first Olympic title in triple jump, the Cuban-born Spaniard Díaz's 18.18m jump at the European Championships in June is the world-leading mark.
- Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis (SWE): The Swede broke his own pole vault world record not once but three times this year, raising the bar from 6.23m to 6.26m via Xiamen, the Olympic Games final in Paris, and Chorzów. It's been a strong year from the Swede, who holds the top eight clearances of 2024 and recently got engaged to girlfriend Desiré Inglander.
- Ethan Katzberg (CAN): The hammer throw world champion added Olympic gold to his list of achievements with a mammoth 84.12m throw in Paris. The Canadian also holds the world lead for the season, having thrown 84.38m in Nairobi at the Kip Keino Classic in April.
- Miltiadis Tengolou (GRE): Now a two-time Olympic champion, Tentoglou also added world indoor gold to his collection back in March. The Greek long jumper is also the world leader, having soared to 8.65m at the European Championships.
How to vote for World Athletics Field Athlete of the Year
Fans can vote for their Women's and Men's Field Athlete of the Year on World Athletics' social media pages, with each individual 'like' on Facebook or Instagram and each repost on X/Twitter counting as one vote.
Social media fan voting will count for 25 per cent of the result, with the World Athletics Council (50 per cent) and World Athletics Family (25 per cent) also voting over the next week from 14 to 20 October.
The top two in each category from this round of voting will be considered finalists, with one final fan vote from 4 November to decide the overall Men's and Women's World Athlete of the Year award winners among the six total finalists in each category through the World Athletics Inside Track platform. Voting will also take place in Track Athlete and Out of Stadium Athlete categories over the next few weeks.
Other awards that will be given out at the 2024 World Athletics Awards include the Male and Female Rising Star awards, a Coaching Achievement Award, Woman of the Year, Photograph of the Year, World Athletics Member Federation Award, and World Athletics President's Awards.
