Two-time Olympic gold medallist Valarie Allman of the USA was named as the international event ambassador of the Delhi Half Marathon 2024 by the organisers on Wednesday.
The Delhi Half Marathon is a gold-standard World Athletics Label Road Race. Started in 2005, the event will mark its 19th edition on Sunday, October 20.
Olympic champions Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda and Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya will headline the men’s and women’s elite fields, respectively.
Allman, who clinched gold medals in the women’s discus throw at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, is also a two-time World Championships medallist, securing silver in 2023 and bronze in 2022.
Allman’s personal best of 71.46 metres, set in April 2022, ranks as the 16th-longest throw in history and a national record.
“I am delighted that my visit to India is for the Delhi Half Marathon and to be a part of something that brings out the vibrant colours of India…I like the sound of that,” Valarie said.
Apart from the half marathon to be contested over 21.0975km as per World Athletics, the Great Delhi Run (∼4.5km), the Senior Citizens’ Run and the Champions with Disability Run (∼2.5km) will be the short-distance runs organised under the Delhi Half Marathon banner for amateur runners.
Defending champions Abhishek Pal and Kavita Yadav will headline the Indian men’s and women’s elite fields, respectively.
